Design and Consulting Services in Industrial Engineering

Our engineering and consulting services can cover several activities according to the needs of each project and each client.

Among typical activities characteristic of an industrial engineering project, we can highlight:

Process Simulation

Partnership with the company WinSim from Houston, Tx, USA, developer of the software Design II for Windows. A tool that expands Pro-Tech's well-known capacity in process engineering, providing rigorous simulation of industrial plants in the areas of petroleum refining, chemical, petrochemical, refrigeration, gas processing and treatment, pipelines, fuel cells, ammonia, methanol, sulfur and hydrogen.

Important step in the definition of a project. Pro-Tech can help their clients to create realistic and clear scopes in the early stages of a project.

In developing or selecting a chemical process, it is often the creation of several technically feasible processing routes. The selection of the most promising route is concerned to issues such as investment cost, operating cost, availability of raw materials, equipment delivery time, etc.

Through engineering calculations based on the law of conservation of mass, chemical reactions engineering, thermodynamics, transport phenomena and unit operations, the inlet and outlet streams of raw materials, products and utilities are defined qualitatively and quantitatively.

A process flow diagram (PFD) shows the main equipment of a chemical process and how they are interconnected. The main process control loops are also indicated in this document, as well as the main results of the mass and energy balances (flow rates, pressures, temperatures, compositions and thermal loads). In addition to serving as an information resource for other design activities (equipment and line sizing), due to their didactic characteristics PFDs are often used after the project as a training tool to operators and supervisors.

The so-called P&ID is perhaps the most important document of an industrial engineering design. In it are represented all process equipment with all piping and accessories that interconnect them, with line sizes, and materials of construction. Also represented in the P&ID are all instruments, control loops and safety interlocks of a process. P&IDs are often revisited by all other disciplines (Piping, Mechanical, Electrical, Instrumentation etc.) throughout the development of a project.

The results of the mass and energy balances and equipment sizing calculations are organized in specification sheets (or data-sheets). These documents include capacity and performance information of process equipment (pumps, vessels, columns, agitators etc.) as well as their main dimensional characteristics, materials of construction etc. Data-sheets are used in the communication with the "external environment" of a project (purchasing department, suppliers).

Like the equipment data-sheets, instrument data-sheets gather operational and performance information (process data, materials of construction, electric power, communication protocol etc.) regarding the sensors, indicators, transmitters, controllers and control valves of a chemical process, so these items can be properly purchased.

The physical arrangement of process and utilities equipment is essential for good operability, efficiency and safety of a chemical process. Issues such as safe spacing between equipment and property boundaries, material handling and people flow are covered in this design activity.
